Although my principal role at the university is research and administrative/executive, I occasionally deliver lectures, particularly on research methods.
My pedagogical approach adheres to interactive learning. Provided that the number of students in postgraduate classes is small, in order to create a more positive learning environment I employ differentiated learning methods by tailoring instructions to students depending on their individual needs - particularly the subject of their thesis/dissertation/project.
My classes commence with a lecture supported by presentation slides and answering student questions that arise, followed by a directed discussion with a predetermined set of questions and free discussion to help the students meet the specific learning outcomes.
Studies suggest that assessment is a powerful drive for learning in postgraduate education. Effective assessment methods play an important role in maximizing students’ learning, motivating them, and providing an impartial and reliable evaluation that benefits both lecturers and students.
I do not give midterms or final exams in the traditional way; instead, I give assignments with adequate time to prepare and observe the progress throughout the semester. These assignments usually include an extended essay or a review paper (in form of a book review, literature review, and/or research problem statement) and an oral presentation.
My responsibilities vary as a co-lecturer and TA, and are defined based on the class needs and the preferences of the principal professor. Generally, these responsibilities are as follows:
a) Deliver teaching - I instructed on research methods including, ontology and epistemology, different types of scientific communication, secondary research and literature review, systematic review & meta-analysis, primary data collection and analysis, qualitative and quantitative methods in interdisciplinary social sciences, research ethics, and how to handle the peer review
b) I gave and graded assignments (usually book reviews, and review papers), and checked assignments and proposals to detect potential plagiarism
c) Contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum and teaching materials
d) Assisting and guiding students to polish the research topics for their thesis.
e) I am also available to assist students with their academic, administrative, and pastoral issues.
